The PlayStation 4 has a large number of role-playing games. From Japanese releases to open world epics and traditional adventures stuffed with text, there’s something for everyone. It’s an exciting and expansive genre in which “East meets West”. Some titles are better than others, and so we’ve amalgamated the 4 best RPGs on PS4:
1. Final Fantasy XV
This game has the ability to capture the imagination of both newcomers and seasoned fans. Noctis wants to take his kingdom back from evil empire of Niflheim. His accomplices are:
- Combat trainer and bodyguard – Gladiolus
- Chef Ignis
- Childhood friend and photographer – Prompto
The storyline is compelling and straightforward in the Final Fantasy lore. The shift to fast paced combat and the summons in this game are truly awe inspiring.
2. Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness
Akira Yasuda, popularly known as Akiman, of Street Fighter 2 fame has designed the characters for this game.
In Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness, you play as Fidel — who has an important task at hand. A spaceship lands in his small village, revealing a young girl who can’t remember who she is.
You can control up to 7 players in this game and switch between them on the fly. What add to the whole gaming experience are the following mind-blowing features:
- Spell Cards for healing and casting offensive spells
- Crafting items and using your cookery skills
- The optional dungeons you can play throughout the game
- Replacing cut-scenes with in game dialogue
- Ray Chase’s voice work (of FFXV).
3. I am Setsuna
What sets this game apart is the retro feel of this JRPG. The game was developed by Tokyo RPG Factory, which recently announced its new title, Lost Sphear. Developed by Tokyo RPG Factory, “I am Setsuna” has you play the role of Endir who has to kill a girl about to be offered as a sacrifice to the monsters surrounding her village.
The combat is pretty straightforward and the scenery of this game is absolutely gorgeous. The text-based dialogue in this title is another excellent feature.
4. Kingdom Hearts 2.8 – Final Chapter Prologue
Kingdom Hearts fans have something to cheer about – the Kingdom Hearts 2.8 – Final Chapter Prologue is an HD re-master of Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and Kingdom Hearts 2.5 on PS4.
Final Chapter Prologue includes:
- A HD re-master of the Nintendo 3DS game
- Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance
- A new title following Aqua from the PSP title Birth by Sleep
- A short movie detailing the pre-Sora in Kingdom Hearts X: Back Cover
In Dream Drop Distance, you wander through Disney worlds as Sora and Riku, battling Dream Eater Nightmares in order to pass your Mark of Mastery exam. Playing each level as two characters gives an interesting spin to gameplay mechanics.
New additions to the Disney portion of the game were:
- The Hunchback of Notre Dame
- Pokémonlike Dream Eater Spirits.
Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth by Sleep – A Fragmentary Passage gives life to the cartoony world for the PS4. You play as Aqua, who needs to find a way out of the Realm of Darkness. This new adventure is really enjoyable and all the spells that you use from the previous incarnations, such as Blizzard, have a noticeable effect on the whole environment. This was missing in the PS2 originals.
The voice acting in the short movie Back Cover is great, and it tries to tie up some of the origin story of the franchise in the events leading up to mobile title Kingdom Hearts Unchained X.
